Father of Sepaktakraw
The International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) and the entire global Sepaktakraw community join together in mourning the loss of a visionary leader, Major General Charouck Arrirachakaran. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to resonate through the sport he so passionately championed and the countless lives he touched.
A Visionary Leader in Sepaktakraw
Major General Charouck Arrirachakaran was more than just the founding President of ISTAF and ASTAF; he was the soul of Sepaktakraw’s global movement. His journey with Sepaktakraw began at an age when the sport was largely unknown outside Southeast Asia. Through his visionary leadership, he transformed Sepaktakraw from a regional pastime into a globally recognised sport, ensuring its inclusion in major international competitions like the Asian Games. His dedication was instrumental in Thailand’s dominance in Sepaktakraw, securing 32 medals (26 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze) from 1990 to 2018 at the Asian Games.
Major General Charouck's efforts went beyond administrative duties. He was a relentless advocate for the sport, travelling across the globe to promote Sepaktakraw, fostering relationships, and inspiring a new generation of athletes and sports enthusiasts. His vision was not just to elevate Sepaktakraw, but to use it as a vehicle for promoting unity, respect, and cultural exchange among nations.
A Pillar of the Olympic Movement
Charouck’s influence was not confined to Sepaktakraw alone. His contributions to the Olympic Movement in Asia were monumental. As Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) since 1995 and an Executive Board Member since 1986, Major General Charouck was a key architect in the development of sports across the continent. His leadership was pivotal in the successful organisation of numerous Asian Games and other regional events, where he championed the cause of sports as a means to foster peace and unity among nations.
In addition to his roles within the OCA, Major General Charouck was a respected figure within the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Thailand. Serving as Vice President and Secretary General, he was instrumental in developing the country’s sports programs across a wide range of disciplines, including athletics, boxing, football, and hockey. His work laid the foundation for Thailand’s strong performance in international competitions, enhancing the nation’s reputation as a sports powerhouse in Asia.
A Champion of Equality and Inclusion
Throughout his life, Major General Charouck was a staunch advocate for gender equality and inclusion in sports. He believed that sports should be a platform where everyone, regardless of gender or background, could shine. This belief was evident in his efforts to ensure that both male and female athletes had equal opportunities to participate and succeed in Sepaktakraw and other sports. His initiatives in this area have left a lasting impact, encouraging more inclusive participation in sports across Asia.
Honouring His Legacy
Major General Charouck’s legacy extends far beyond the titles he held and the organisations he led. His life was dedicated to the betterment of others through sports. He was awarded numerous honours, including the Olympic Order and the ANOC Merit Award, in recognition of his unparalleled contributions to the world of sports. These accolades, however, only begin to capture the breadth of his influence and the depth of his commitment.
As we honour his memory, we are reminded of the values he held dear—respect, unity, and excellence. Major General Charouck’s vision for Sepaktakraw and his contributions to the broader sports community will continue to inspire future generations of athletes, leaders, and enthusiasts. His work has ensured that Sepaktakraw will remain a symbol of cultural pride and international camaraderie, echoing his belief in the power of sports to bring people together.
