Doping is connected with several hazards. It's critical to comprehend and take into account all of the repercussions of doping, including detrimental impacts on one's physical and emotional well-being, loss of sponsorship or prize money, and irreversible harm to one's reputation and relationships.
Health
Performance-enhancing drug (PED) use may affect an athlete's physical and mental health in both the short and long term. Certain performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) have been shown to have serious adverse effects and to harm an athlete's body irreparably, depending on the drug, dosage, and length of usage.
Scientific studies have demonstrated a significant association between the use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) and mental health problems in addition to the physical ones. Most frequently, doping drug usage has been linked to psychosis, compulsive problems, and anxiety.
Social
A person's reputation and social relationships will suffer if they are linked to doping or a doping violation. Athletes or those found guilty of doping are stigmatised in numerous ways and are frequently viewed as cheats by the public.
People's private lives and social relationships are severely harmed by doping because they may decide they no longer want to be associated with someone who has tarnished a sport's brand and shown bad judgement.
Financial
The financial impact of a ban resulting from an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) will be substantial for the individual. This includes the need for athletes and Athlete Support Staff to surrender winnings or face financial penalties.
Termination of sponsorship agreements and contracts, as well as the loss of government subsidies, money, and other financial assistance, are further detrimental effects of doping.
Sanctions
An athlete's capacity to train and compete will be impacted by an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV). A prohibition might prevent coaches and other Athlete Support Personnel from working with athletes and practicing their trade. An ADRV can result in a warning or a lifetime ban from all sports, among other sanctions.
It is important to note that individuals banned in one sport will also be prohibited from playing, coaching or working with athletes in any other capacity in a different sport.
It is also against the Code to work with Athlete Support Personnel (coaches, trainers, physicians or other) who are ineligible on account of an ADRV, or those who have been criminally convicted or professionally disciplined in relation to doping.
Beyond the legal consequences, an increasing number of public authorities and governments have adopted legislations that treat doping as a criminal act. Consequently, in addition to being ineligible to coach or compete, you may face criminal charges in your country. Depending on the national legislation and the degree of the violation, charges can lead to fines, social service requirements and even incarceration.
A full list of all Athlete Support Personnel who are currently suspended from working with Athletes or other Persons can be found on WADA’s Prohibited Association List.
